California court certification
California is widely multilingual. More than 45% of people living in our state speak a language other than English at home (Source: US Census Bureau). California was the first state to adopt laws requiring interpretation and conduct standards to ensure language access for people navigating the legal system. That is why the Judicial Council established a body that certifies or registers different languages in order to guarantee that LEPs have fair and full access to the justice system.

Certification is a rigorous process that ensures interpreters are familiar with the legal system, understand the ethics of being a court interpreter, and are capable of performing legal interpretation without omissions, additions, and without changing the meaning. The passing rate for the certification test is on average 12% (source: Judicial Council of California). It requires complete mastery of both languages as well as years of education and practice. This highly-demanding standard is why putting your interpretation needs in the hands of a certified interpreter is a wise choice that ensures accurate and professional interpretation.

Simultaneous mode
This mode takes place when the interpreter follows the speaker in real time. Since the interpreter needs to hear the message, there is a slight delay called décalage that allows the interpreter to not just hear what is said, but to make any necessary adjustments to render the message correctly in the target language. This mode of interpretation is often used when there is less interaction between the speaker and the person who requires interpretation.

Consecutive Mode
The consecutive mode is often used in settings where there is more interaction between two or more speakers. It is commonly used for interviews, Q&As, depositions, or other forms of interrogation. In this mode, the interpreter takes notes while the speaker talks and then renders the message in the target language, waits for the other party's reply and then renders the reply in the opposite language.
Sight Translation
Sight translation is considered a mode of interpretation since it consists of the oral rendition of the contents of a document into the target language. This mode is used in settings where there is a document that needs to be reviewed in a language that any of the parties is unable to understand.
LEP
LEP
In English-speaking countries, the term LEP is used to refer to a person with Limited English Proficiency. Interpreters facilitate LEPs language access.
